HP Introduces Hardware As A Service – Subscribers For Life

Have you been enjoying an era where maintenance  on hardware were optional extras? If HP has their way that era will soon come crashing down. A new blog post oddly-titled “Customers for life” explains that enterprise owners of HP ProLiant servers must now pony up for maintenance once their warranty expires if they need future firmware updates.  Perhaps some companies will take their chances and skip the warranty but I bet more will pay out of fear that major hardware firmware issues could cause security issue.

Or maybe a better idea is just to skip the HP line and buy from hardware companies who don’t require that you pay to receive patches for problems discovered in the hardware they sold you?

  1. It will be interesting to see how this works out for HP. They are clearly jumping on the me to wagon of software providers. If it works for HP, how long before Dell, Lenovo, and the rest follow suit?
